Chang Shuhong Gallery

Chang Shuhong was born in Hangzhou, went for study in France at an early age and returned to teach at the National Art School in 1937. In 1943, he moved his family to remote Dunhuang to pursue his long-cherished art of Mogao Grottos. From then on, he started his 40 years’ hard life and artistic creation of Dunhuang, renowned as the “Guardian of Dunhuang Caves”.
Chang was an accomplished painter. During the early years of his study in France, he created many oil paintings, which brought him gold medals. Even during his laborious times in Dunhuang, he was so struck by everything in the Northwest as to produce a lot of landscape paintings and figure paintings to record his impressions of life and art there. Though only a few of his precious works remained, they are of great value.
In 1999, Chang’s family presented to the Zhejiang Provincial Museum the whole collection of his 240-odd works, including oil paintings, gouaches and sketches. All these works give a basically complete picture of his style. In order to commemorate this great people’s artist, Zhejiang Provincial Museum set up “Chang Shuhong Gallery” in Gushan Branch to commemorate him permanently.
